Hurricane Evacuation

There is the possibility that students may be asked to evacuate the area because of a hurricane threat. Commence preparations at this time. Additional instructions, updates and, if necessary, the order to evacuate will be disseminated by the Student Affairs Office and the International Student Services Office (for international students). If evacuation is necessary, all students will be required to depart the campus.

Transportation

Arrange for transportation NOW, should evacuation be ordered. However do not evacuate until instructed to do so. Automobiles should be filled with gasoline as soon as possible, and driven only as necessary after filling. Arrangements should be made to remove all automobiles from campus if evacuation is ordered. Students without transportation should make arrangements for a ride with fellow students. Persons with vehicles are asked to share space with those who have no vehicle. If you can provide a ride to fellow student, please notify Student Affairs of your destination and the number of passengers you can accommodate. If you are unable to arrange transportation, the University will provide transportation to the Sam Houston University campus in Huntsville. Students needing transportation should notify Student Affairs immediately. Student Affairs will instruct you as to where and when to meet the evacuation bus. Shelter and food will be provided for you, however you should take two changes of clothing and toiletry articles. All personal belongings should fit in one bag. A resident advisor will accompany you to Sam Houston University and handle all arrangements once there. International Students should notify International Student Services immediately if they are unable to arrange transportation. International Student Services will instruct you as to where and when to meet the evacuation transportation. You should take two changes of clothing and toiletry articles. All personal belongings should fit in one bag. Once you have finalized your plans, complete an Evacuation and Emergency Information Sheet and return it to your RA, or Residential Service Office. Preparation

Unplug all electrical appliances. Clear outside areas of personal gear. Clean all refrigerators of perishables. Unplug them and leave the doors open. All food should be taken with you or carried to the dumpster. Empty trash cans. Lock all doors and windows. Remove personal carpets from floors. Students should lock up all personal belongings to secure against looters. Personal gear should be places on top of furniture and/or moved to bathrooms. Clothes, bedding, and shoes should be protected from possible floods.

Evacuation Notification and Check-out Procedures

The order to evacuate will be issued by the Campus President’s Office and will be relayed to Students by the Student Affairs Staff and by the International Student Services Office. Announcements shall be made via the Residential Staff Members. Fliers addressing the evacuation announcement will be left on any door unanswered during the door to door walk through. Students residing in university dorms must sign out of the dormitory at the Residential Services Office, fill out an Evacuation and Emergency Information Sheet and turn it to the Residential Services. International Students are encouraged to complete the Evacuation and Emergency Information Sheet and leave it in the International Student Services Office. Off-campus students are encouraged to complete an Emergency Sheet and leave it in the Student Affairs Office, located between the University Post Office and Police Department. Let family members know where you are evacuating to before leaving campus.

Post-storm Procedures

Listen for announcements. The media will be asked to announce both the cancellation and the resumption of classes. A voice mail number for Lamar University is available to you for up-to-date information regarding the re-opening of campus. The voice mail number is .409.880.7011, and is available to you twenty-four hours a day. The voice mail number at Lamar University will be activated the day the evacuation is ordered. Statements made through the media, and the voice mail, indicate the level of return to the Campus following the storm’s passing. The following wording shall be used, although additional information may be provided: “Lamar University at Beaumont is now open for return to campus of all students.” Once back on campus you should be aware of potential hazards that may exist. Remain aware of your surroundings. Snakes, wild animals, and rats are likely to be present, although University personnel shall make every effort to clear the area before your return. If you are bitten by any of the above, report to Student Health Center as soon as possible for medical attention. Additional instructions and information will be disseminated through the Residential Housing Staff and the International Student Services Office.
