Who built the wall?

The El Dorado Wall company located in Boulder, Colorado.

How much does it cost to climb?

The Rock Climbing Wall is available at no charge to current students, faculty, and staff who are permitted to access the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center and have signed a liability waiver.

Can I use my own gear?

Patrons are permitted to use their own shoes and harness at the Rock Climbing Wall as long as the harness release on the liability waiver has been signed. All equipment must approved by the UIAA or CE for climbing and is subject to inspection by Rock Wall Staff.

Where is the Rock Wall located?

The Rock Climbing Wall is located on the main concourse of the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center on the Lamar University campus.

Can I reserve the Rock Wall?

Only current LU student, staff and faculty can reserve the rock wall, subject to availability. Questions about Rock Wall reservations should be directed to the Outdoor Pursuits Coordinator.

Do I have to have to have previous climbing knowledge to use the Rock Wall?

No, you don't need any previous climbing experience to use the Rock Wall. Our Rock Wall Staff is experienced and available during regularly scheduled hours to assist you with any questions you have.

Do I have to take a belay or safety class before I climb?

The only requirements needed to be able to climb are a valid Lamar University ID and a signed liability waiver. Climbing clinics are offered for free if you would like to expand your climbing knowledge and skill.

If I already know how to belay and use the climbing equipment, do I have to attend the climbing class before taking a belay test?

No. If you are already familiar with the climbing equipment and the belay techniques demonstrated by the Rock Wall Staff, you may demonstrate your skills at any time during regular wall hours with a staff member.

Can I rent Rock Wall equipment for my own personal use?

No. Liability issues prohibit us from renting out rock climbing equipment to patrons for their personal use.
